Mike is Divorced: An Introduction
by Ivan Raczycki
To summarize Mike is Divorced is to summarize a lifetime; that is, if the lifetime is poor, pathetic, lonely, rude, obnoxious, violent, drunk, and divorced. Essentially, Mike is Divorced is the tale of a man named Mike who is divorced and lives this so hideously described lifestyle.
Richie Holdick is more than a good friend of mine, he’s also a damn fine entertainer. When he writes these comics, intertangled with cynicism, woe, and controversy, he’s doing more than shocking me and making me laugh: he’s making me question why it’s so damn funny. Then we hang out, get drunk, and talk about Sartre while blissed out on Daydream Nation. That Richie!
Wonderfully though, the comic becomes more than pen sketches on printer paper and best friend pity giggles. It is the epitome of forty-something nothingness, with enough wit and fantastical minimalism that it resonates with both young and old; the fact that it comes out of some goofy-haired design major only adds to the appeal and relevance.
So if you’re poor, pathetic, lonely, rude, obnoxious, violent, drunk, and divorced, or if you’re well-off, happy, surrounded by friends, polite, quiet, gentle, sober, and sharing your life with the ones you love, Mike is Divorced needs to be one of the fragments that holds your life together, or if you’re like Mike, keeps it apart.
